PLAINWEAVE TO PICKUP: WOVEN BANDS ON THE BAND HEDDLE
WITH CAROLINE FEYLING
Four Thursdays in October, 2026:
October 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th
5:30 - 8:30pm, each class day
Handwoven bands can be so much more than trim or decoration. Bands woven on the band heddle date back hundreds of years in Scandinavia. Historically they were used for everything from hair ties, to rope, or even horse reins! These bands decorated the ordinary through use of bright colors and bold patterns.
Explore the beautiful yet utilitarian world of band weaving with Scandinavian weaver, textile artist, and craft instructor, Caroline Feyling. In this four week class, students will learn to backstrap weave both plainweave and pickup bands on a grindvev (band heddle). We will weave samples along with longer bands in both techniques. Students will enjoy plenty of opportunities to explore color, texture, and pattern throughout the course of the class. By the end of this class students will be able to design, set up, and weave plainweave and pickup bands independently.
This portable and beginner friendly technique is an excellent first foray into the world of weaving. A basic tool kit and materials will be provided by the teacher with the option to purchase additional weaving tools at the end of the class.
