TRADITIONAL WOODWORKING: HANDCUT MARQUETRY

WITH KATHERINE EDMONDS

Friday to Sunday, November 20th - 22nd, 2026

Friday 6:00 - 8:00pm

Saturday 10:00am - 4:00pm

Sunday 10:00am - 4:00pm

Have you always wanted to add marquetry to your woodworking projects but are unsure how? Or perhaps you are just curious about what marquetry is? Marquetry is a traditional woodworking technique that dates back to the 17th century. It’s like painting with wood, without the paint! Marquetry uses thin wooden veneers to create a picture. Once compiled, the picture is then applied to a thicker wood surface, which is then used in furniture or other wooden objects.

In this workshop, Kat will teach you how to create hand-cut marquetry using shop-sawn veneers with a fret saw. We will cover both packet cutting and double-bevel sawing—two methods you can use at home to craft your own designs. Additionally, we will explore how to make your own veneers using a bandsaw. And finally, we will cover sand shading to learn how to add depth to your pieces.

Over the weekend, students will create a few simple projects, ending class by each designing a small marquetry project of their own (such as a coaster, pair of earrings, or a tray base). This is a great class for beginning woodworkers as hand-cut marquetry offers an approachable way to start. It is also a great fit for experienced woodworkers looking to enhance their furniture pieces or objects with marquetry. Kat loves teaching this class because it helps folks find their inner creativity within a traditional craft practice.
