CARVING LETTERS: LARGE AND SMALL
WITH KIKO DENZER
Learn how to use a simple penknife or pocketknife (many kinds will work) to cut the shapes and curves of different letters into soft and hard woods. Learn to work with the grain of the wood to make clean slices that will work with your particular design and piece of wood. This is a perfect accompaniment for spoon carvers who want to add ornament and meaning to their spoons, or for anyone who wants to cut letters large or small.
Start with simple triangles, lines, and open curves; then combine them to make letters, from simple block forms to more challenging curves and shapes of scripts and arabesques. There will be a variety of blades and techniques to try as we explore and develop awareness, skills, and design strategies, and discuss the work of ornamentation (which, whether simple or complex, constitutes the grammar and structure of both beauty and meaning).
