WILLOW BASKET WEAVING: IRISH CREEL

WITH ELI AND BEN GOODWIN

Saturday & Sunday, July 19-20th, 2025

9 am - 4 pm (7 hours), each day

In this hard working and physical two day class, students will learn all the steps involved in the manufacture of an Irish Creel style willow basket. The weaving is a ground up process where the upright structural members are pushed into the ground and the basket is woven upside down and finished at the bottom. If students have time, handles can be added after the basket is removed from the ground.

The Irish creel is a uniquely Irish and Scottish basket style. It is unique for its “upside down” construction where sticks are shoved into the ground in the shape of the desired basket, woven around into the desired height is reached, and then finished at the bottom of the basket!

Class Details

Age Requirement: this class is for adults 18+.

Location: Corvallis Waldorf School

Students bring: hand clippers, a knife and a bodkin. Sharpened hardwood bodkins will be provided but the commercial ones are worth buying. Work will be conducted on the ground level so kneeling pads or soft material to cushion the knees and a favorite chair are highly recommended.

Accessibility note: the construction of this basket requires long days of kneeling, squatting, bending, and sitting on the ground. Some hand strength is also helpful to bend and work with the willow.
