INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL DYES
WITH MADELAINE CORBIN
Learn to add color to textiles using colorful flowers and plants from nature! In this introductory class, survey four dye plants and four distinct fibers to produce over 32 color samples. Through hands-on instruction, students will explore key dye techniques: together we'll make 4 dye baths, shift colors with iron, and modify our dyes with pH adjusters to unlock a spectrum of hues.
While our dyes are simmering, we will discuss methods of preparing fibers for taking color (scouring, mordanting, and more!) to develop a deeper understanding of how fiber type, mordant, and modifiers influence plant-based color. This class is ideal for anyone interested in the art and science of natural dyes. Participants will leave with swatches documenting their results and one naturally dyed scarf.
