BUILDING TARWEED'S CLASSROOM: GREENWOOD STOOLS

WITH DUNCAN ELLINWOOD AND ROSE HOLDORF

4-week course on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in October (class in session)

5:30 - 8:30 pm (3 hours each class day, 24 total hours)

Tuesdays, October 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th Thursdays, October 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th

This class is a chance to help furnish the Tarweed Folk School space while learning the fundamentals of staked furniture construction. Over 4 weeks, students will build shop stools to be used by future Tarweed classes for years to come while learning the basics of woodcarving, mortise and tenon joinery, and furniture design.

Participants will use both traditional and contemporary techniques to layout and drill angled mortises, carve stool legs and fit tapered tenons, sculpt a concave seat using gouges and a mallet, join the components together with glue and wedges, and discuss the properties of milkpaint, with the option at the end of class (as time allows) to paint your bespoke stool using an age old technique. The skills and knowledge gained during this class are fundamental in making staked furniture and can be applied in making chairs, stools, benches, and tables.
