BARK TANNED FISH SKIN LEATHER

WITH THE RECLAIM COOPERATIVE

Saturday, May 16th, 2026

1:00 - 4:00pm

This hands-on class will dive into the art and craft of tanning fish leather with bark. Working with locally sourced materials, you’ll learn how to clean and prepare fish skins to be tanned into durable leather. During the class, we will discuss traditional usage of fish leather in cultures worldwide, qualities that make fish leather uniquely strong and flexible, and the aspects of our locally sustained process.

Using natural, low-impact methods, participants will tan their own fish skins without the use of harsh chemicals, instead relying on techniques that highlight local natural resources. You’ll leave with practical skills, a deeper appreciation for waste-to-resource craftsmanship, and your own piece of fish leather! Whether you’re interested in leatherworking, ecological design, or simply trying something new, this class provides a grounded, creative experience rooted in place and process.
