MAKE YOUR OWN CARVING KNIFE
WITH NATHANIEL STEIN
Three Mondays in September, 2026:
September 14th, 21st, and 28th
5:30 - 8:30pm, each class day
Discover the pleasure and flexibility offered by making your own tools! Students in this class will make their own sloyd-style straight bladed carving knife. These are simple handy knives for carving and handiwork. By making your own carving knife you can customize the blade and handle shape to make a tool suited just for your needs.
Over the first two evenings, students will shape the knife blades cold from bar stock via hand tools, heat treat the blade for optimal hardness, and mount and shape a wooden handle. Power tools will be used in the handle work. A third evening is available for finishing up work or making a sheath for the knife as time allows.
This class is not a blacksmithing class, the blades will be shaped cold via stock removal. Much of the process here can be replicated at a home shop for future tools. The heat treat process will heat the blade to over 1500 degrees, students should be expecting brief exposure to high temperatures.
