BLACK ASH SPLINT FOR BASKETRY: MATERIAL ACQUISITION

WITH APRIL STONE

Tuesday to Thursday, May 19th to 21st, 2026

Tuesday, May 19th, 5:30 - 8:30pm

Wednesday, May 20th, 5:30 - 8:30pm

Thursday, May 21st, 5:30 - 8:30pm

Obtaining the raw splint for basket making is something that takes time, patience and a whole lot of energy. Not everyone who wishes to weave with this beautiful, native material has access to the forest or the trees or the knowledge of the process itself. Sometimes, it’s just nice to have someone show the way and give some pointers.

In this three evening course, participants will have access to two log pounding stations and all the tools needed to pound Black Ash logs for material acquisition. Techniques for splint splitting (to make thinner) and splint scraping (to remove surface fibers) will also be shared by the instructor. There will be plenty of time to ask questions, get answers, share stories (including pictures and videos) of all things related to live harvest, material process, storage, various basket projects, EAB (Emerald Ash Borer beetle), and the future of this beautiful tree on the landscape.

All materials pounded from the logs will be distributed amongst the participants for future weaving projects. Fingers crossed, there may even be a freshly harvested Oregon Ash on site to work and learn from!

Strength and stamina are required as we take turns pounding as needed. This truly is a “one more ring” kind of course so come prepared with a whole lot of patience and a good attitude for some good learning and a great workout.
