DISCOVERING LICHENS

WITH SUNIA YANG

This class offers multiple sessions:

Session 1: Sunday, February 8th, 10:00am - 12:00pm (morning)

Session 2: Sunday, February 8th, 12:30 - 2:30pm (afternoon)

Session 3: Sunday, February 22nd, 10:00am - 12:00pm (morning)

Session 4: Sunday, February 22nd, 1:00 - 3:00pm (afternoon)

The Pacific Northwest is one of the great lichen diversity hotspots in the world. Lichens are everywhere around us and yet they are not so easy to learn. Come discover the beautiful exotic world of lichens, what their patterns show us about the world, and why they matter.

In these free walks, we'll enter the world of lichens through the microscope and walking with a hand lens. The first session will start from Wade Hardware and focus on what lichens (and mosses) tell us about our environment in town. The second session will be at Bald Hill Farm, focusing on what lichens tell us about a more rural world. We'll also talk about ethical harvesting of lichens for natural dyeing. (The lichens are very very different in both places.)

Both walks will be 1-2 miles at a slow pace. The amazing photo below taken by Richard Droker is of a rather average hardwood twig in the Pacific Northwest!
