MAKE A HAND BROOM
WITH KIKO DENZER
Make your own whisk broom! These common tools have a long and diverse history; everybody sweeps! The first broom was probably just a twiggy branch; then several bundles of twigs bound together with cordage, but all were typically made with available local materials. The standard kitchen broom was actually invented fairly recently, in New England, where farmers were growing sorghum for grain. One farmer bundled up some of the leftover seed heads into a broom for his wife. Then the Shakers invented a vise they used to flatten the bundle to make it wider and more efficient. In this class, however, we’ll make a small hand or whisk broom (also called a “turkey wing” broom).
The simple process will teach you basic techniques for making different and bigger brooms as well (you’ll also learn some neat tricks with string that can come in handy in all sorts of situations).
Age Requirement: 15 and up (younger kids negotiable, please email us with questions). Please note: ages 15-17 must have a parent or guardian also registered for the class to participate.
