EARTHEN PLASTERS AND COB FOR AN EXISTING HOME

WITH KIKO DENZER

Use the dirt under your feet to upgrade and ornament your home! This class is an introduction to working with earth as a building material: from plaster wall finishes to sculptural and structural mud: aka “cob,” or “adobe.” Homeowners, builders, and artists of all kinds can learn to turn the mud underfoot into sculpture to live in. Mud can not only make your home more beautiful, it can also improve interior air quality, as well as helping to control temperature and humidity. Make practice panels that you can take home to frame or incorporate into your own renovations.

Age Requirement: this class is for adults and youth ages 14-17 if their parent or guardian is also registered for the class.

Students bring:

  • Joyful hands and heart.

  • If you have sensitive skin or you just prefer the protection, you might want your favorite waterproof or water-resistant gloves.

  • Feet! Barefoot is most fun, but rubber boots or lightweight shoes (“aqua sox” or equivalent) all work for tender or sensitive feet. Slip-on sandals are nice to have between mixes. We’ll be mixing coarse river sand, clayey subsoil, straw, and other fibers.

  • A sample of your local sub-soil, so we can compare and contrast (a cup to a quart).

  • Photos of your own work to share with the group, or any other interesting/applicable inspiration.

  • Skin lotion (mud/earth can have a drying effect; lanolin or lanolin/beeswax are good).

  • Sun hat, sun protection, change of clothes.

  • Rain gear (we hope this will just be insurance).

  • Water bottle.

  • Paper and pen/pencil for notes/records, etc. (better than photos!).

  • Rations as needed, especially if you have special dietary needs.

  • Feel free to bring any favorite tools and/or materials you might feel appropriate for this course.

Accessibility note: most work completed from a standing position.
